In Loving Memory of Paul Hill

The North Carolina State Folk Festival

This page is dedicated to the finest gentleman who was a long time friend, mentor, and a Thumb Picker musician. Paul entertained audiences all over the United States from festivals, churches, Highland Games and music conventions. He was a close friend and brother to Clay and Al Lunsford for almost forty years, and helped start the annual Thumb Pickers Convention in Statesville, North Carolina.

Throughout his musical career, Paul won over 200 awards, and is a legend at the North Carolina State Folk Festival where for 45 years, he won Guitarist of the Year, and received the Bascom Lamar Lunsford Trophy three different times.

Paul's proudest moment is in 2011 when he became the National Winner for the Creative Arts Festival award which was sponsored by the V.A. and only for veterans. A professional concert and award ceremony was held at Vertebo University in La Crosse, WI, and Paul performed and sand with the patriotic choir. The evening was filmed by PBS and aired later that year.

Paul was a lover of nature, gardening, avid beekeeper, and a member of the Beekeepers Association, and loved taking care of his cats. Paul was a life long member of Liberty United Methodist Church and many Sundays, Paul would be sitting on the front bench by the piano playing one of his beloved Martin guitar's.

Throughout the years Paul has recorded a lot of records, cassettes, and CD's, and has been written and featured in hundreds of newspapers and magazines. He was friends with a lot of legends of bluegrass and country music, and recorded a CD with Jesse McReynolds of the Grand Ole Opry Members Jim and Jesse. Paul's music is preserved in the Appalachian Special Collections at Appalachian State University.

The last public performance of Paul was to a packed house at the Rowan Public Library on December 6, 2012. The evening was filled with energized music from Paul, Matthew Weaver, The Edwards Family, and David Grubb. It is a evening of wonderful memories that will forever be with me. Paul is missed, but he and his music is not forgotten. In the near future a CD collection of 50's years of Paul's music will be released. Clay Lunsford and Matthew Weaver are releasing a CD in winter 2016 and is  dedicated to our long time friend and brother. Matthew proudly plays Paul's D-28 Martin in concerts and can feel the spirit of Paul with him everytime.

Paul is survived by his beloved wife Lena who is a sweet, caring person, and she is keeping his music memory alive too. I am thankful for her love and support along with Paul's niece, Lunda and Eric Eller and their son Bobby Clement-The Gold Hill Family and Ken and Marie Harmon.
